20 Pounder Parrott Shell

SOLD

Item: Unfired US 3.67 inch (20 pounder) Parrott common shell.
Construction: Cast iron with short brass ring sabot.
Approximate size: Weight: 16.2 pounds.  Diameter: 3.67 inches.  Length: 10 1/8 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated, with light pitting on approximately half of the iron body and no repairs.  The threads in the fuze hole appear to be in good condition so as to allow for a fuze, with equally as good threads, to easily screw in.  This shell has been deactivated and is ready for display.
Comments: Notice the chisel marks on its base that indicate where excess mold vent iron overflow was chiseled off.  According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", Parrott shells with the short brass ring sabot (aka "Army sabot") began appearing on battlefields in the spring of 1863.  The Navy model, with the tall band sabot, was produced in 1861 and began showing up in early 1862.  This artillery shell will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
