3-Inch Dyer Case-Shot Artillery Nose Section

SOLD

This Federal artillery fragment is the nose section of a 3-inch Dyer "case-shot" including its "lipless" Dyer time-fuze adaptor. The iron is in very good condition as well as the fuze which is constructed of a solder-like alloy. The bottom section of the case-shot was not recovered with the nose and presumably exploded away in smaller sections. It was excavated by Virginia relic hunter Claude Taylor in Manassas, VA. According to Pete George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", the fact that "the fuze plug has a “pinhole” (1/8-to-3/16”) opening in its base", confirms that it is a "case-shot" and not a Dyer common-shell which had a 3/8 inch opening in the base of its fuze plug. Its body diameter measures approximately 2.92 inches, the fuze diameter measures approximately .93 inch., and its length is approximately 2.47 inches. This Dyer nose section will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
