Field-Made Lead "Tomahawk"

SOLD

This lead tomahawk or axe is larger than most field-made relics I encounter, measuring approximately 4-1/2 inches in length, with a 2 x 1-5/8-inch head. It weighs 4.10 ounces. It has an overall dirty grey-white patina and is in good solid condition. According to the digger's typed label it was recovered 1970, from Harrison's Landing, which is located in Charles City County, VA.

Reference: Examples of similar field-made tomahawks and axe-heads are pictured and described in the following reference books:

  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillip, page 194, item 7 and page 198, item 3.
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of the Civil War 1861-1865 with Supplement" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 142, item 6 and on page 148, items 11, 12, 13, & 17.

See above pages in additional images.

This relic was acquired directly from the family of E. V. Smith. Mr. Smith, a lifelong Virginia relic hunter, thoughtfully recorded the tomahawk's year and location of recovery. The digger's label will be included. It will be an excellent opportunity to add a very nice field-made item to any excavated Civil War campsite or general relic collection.
