Item: Unexploded Confederate 12 Pounder Sideloader Half Shell
Construction: Cast iron with iron case-shot and lead side plug..
Approximate size: Weight: 5 pounds. Diameter: 4.5 inches.
Condition: Very good, excavated, with minor exterior pitting and rust build-up. The interior contents (or matrix) is in solid condition. There is an old unreadable label that is affixed to the exterior near the lead side plug.
Comments: This unexploded shell nicely shows its interior contents of an asphalt/pitch matrix with iron balls. What is interesting about this artillery relic is that it appears that when it was sawed in half, the cut of the saw was only through the shell wall and not through its matrix. When the two halves were pried apart, some of the iron case-shot remained in place just above the cut surface of the shell walls giving this half shell a very cool three dimensional appearance. This case shot half shell will be a wonderful educational display piece as well as excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield, or general relic collection.
