Carbine Sling Buckle - Thick & Heavy - Confederate Imitation

SOLD

Item: ExcavatedCarbine Sling Buckle - Heavy & Thick - Confederate Imitation
Construction: Cast brass. Center belt loop bar with two brass tongues.
Condition: Excellent, excavated. The brass has a dark brown patina.  The belt attachment tongues freely move on the belt loop bar.  There are no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Comments:  This carbine sling buckle is noticeably heavier and thicker in design.  According to Dr. Lon W. Keim's reference book, "Confederate General Service Accoutrement Plates", these buckles are a "Thick C.S. imitation of a U.S. carbine sling buckle".  A similar example of this buckle can be found in the above mentioned book on page 311 as figure 515.  This buckle will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
Recovered: This buckle was acquired directly from the digger who advised that he recovered it on April 11, 2007 in Madison County, VA. at a house site near the Rapidan River. (Several other items were found including the wreath of a two piece CS buckle).
Approximate size:  49 x 81 mm.
