Confederate Sword Hanger

SOLD

This excavated Confederate sword hanger is in excellent condition and was recovered in the area of Charlestown, WV. It is constructed of cast brass which now has a very pleasing dusty green patina. It measures approximately 2-1/2 inches in overall length. These devices hung from the leather sword belt and were designed to carry the officer's swords. It has no cracks, breaks, or repairs.

Similar examples of sword hangers, both CS and US, can be found in the following Civil War relic reference books:

  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of the Civil War 1861-1865" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 183 in illustration #8.
  • "Civil War Artifacts: A Guide for the Historian" by Howard R. Crouch on page 207, #5.

See above pages in the additional images.

This sword hanger was acquired directly from the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War campsite, battlefield, or general relic collection.
