Confederate Tin Drum Canteen

This excavated Confederate tin "drum" canteen is in fair condition and was recovered from Port Hudson, LA. The additional enlargement pictures will indicate that the canteen has a few holes and is missing a couple of sections of its circular rim connecting the two sides of the canteen. There is a significant dent to one side with a portion of the spout still present. There are also two of three complete strap loops still present on the circular rim. One side of the canteen has been clear coated, along with a few other areas, for preservation purposes. While the condition of this canteen is still remarkably sturdy, it does require gentle handling and would be best preserved by being being left unhandled and simply displayed. Examples of Confederate tin drum canteens, very similar to this one, can be found pictured in the fourth printing of Stanley S. Phillip's book "Excavated Artifacts From Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" on page 68 as items 2 & 3. This canteen will be an excellent addition to any Civil War campsite or general relic collection. Approximately 6 inches in diameter and 1 3/4 inches in width. $195.00 Questions?
