Comments: Notice According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", "this type shell made their battlefield appearance is Spring 1863. It appears to be unfired, as I cannot see any rifling marks at all. This type almost always “takes the rifling” extremely well. To see no rifling-marks at all strongly indicates it exploded without being fired. Perhaps it was in a caisson that got hit and blew up".
