Eagle Cuff Button On Root Stem

SOLD

This interesting relic is a general service eagle cuff button which was excavated with a plant root stem that grew directly through the eye of its shank.  For decades it rested undisturbed in the ground during the root's growth until the digger, the late Dennis Irvin, recovered it during a relic hunt in Remington, VA.  After that time this delicate relic was displayed in his relic office and, in an odd way, I suppose it may have symbolized a new beginning of growth and life after such a long horrific and deadly period of American history.  The button is in excellent condition with a well defined eagle clutching an olive branch in its right talon and three arrows in its left.  The rear is solid and does not appear to have a back mark.  The root stem, while fragile, is in remarkably solid condition for its age and if properly displayed and, more importantly, left alone, it should last long enough to be enjoyed by generations.  The root grew in such a way that it basically captured the button as the button will not slide off either end.  Clicking on the above Dennis Irvin link will take you a great story of Dennis, and his brother, Paul.  The button has a very pleasing even brown patina.  Its diameter measures approximately 14 mm with no pushes, cracks, breaks, or repairs.  The stem is now dry and stiff, and measures approximately 8 inches.  This button and stem will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War campsite or general relic collection.
