Eagle Plate - Triple Marked Rare Straight Line Example - Boyd / Sheppard / US

SOLD

Item: Excavated US eagle plate manufacturer & inspector straight line marked Boyd & Sons, Boston, U.S. / T. J. Sheppard.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill, and iron wire loops.
Condition: Very good, excavated, highly detailed eagle. Its brass face has a very nice deep brown patina with a very well-defined eagle, clutching arrows in its right talon and an olive branch in its left.  The rear solder shows surface pitting but is nearly complete with one iron attachment loop still present, but bent and with a break.  The other loop is missing.  Also found on the rear solder is the manufacturer stamp, found on three straight lines (not arched, as is much more common) of "BOYD & SONS". "BOSTON", "US" along with the inspector's stamp of "T. J. SHEPPARD" stamped away from the manufacturer mark.  While the inspector's is fairly well defined, the manufacturer's stamp is difficult to see under normal room lighting, but is visible with a good light and magnifier.  Included in the additional images are some enlargements with one including red arrows pointing to the marks.  The plate has no cracks, repairs, or other bends or breaks.
Comments:  Manufacturer marked plates are difficult to recover in general and to find an example, such as this, "straight line" triple marked eagle plate is very rare. This example includes an old tag and written on one side in blue ink is the following: "BATTLE OF SAVAGE STATION VA. OR THE PEACH ORCHARD FOUGHT JUNE 29 1863".  The other side, also in blue ink, is a tag number and "BOYD & SONS", "BOSTON", "US", and "T. J. SHEPPARD".  The detail of the eagle on this marked plate is simply outstanding and this example will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general collection.
Recovered: Savage's Station, VA
Approximate diameter: 64 mm.
