Federal 3.8 Inch Type II Hotchkiss Case-Shot

SOLD

This Federal 3.8 inch type II Hotchkiss case-shot is in very good condition and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery collection. This example was fired but did not explode and is now disarmed and safe for display. It is complete with its brass fuse plug and lead band sabot. The iron, which was lightly coated many years ago for preservation, is in good shape with only minimal pitting. While some examples have patent information on their base, this one does not. This case-shot measures approximately 3.71 across at its base cup, is approximately 7 1/4 inches in length and weighs approximately 14.4 pounds. An example of this case-shot can be found on page 178 of the 1993 edition of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War" by Thomas S. Dickey and Peter C. George and also in the 1980 edition of the same book on page 144.
