Pre-Civil War Flat Button - Cedar Creek

SOLD

Backmark: "CAIRNS & Co. / GILT" rm
Construction: Flat, one-piece.
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Very good, excavated, secure shank present and bent over.  There is a moderate amount of gilt remaining on the rear and this button has no cracks, repairs, or other bends.
Comments: This button was acquired directly from the digger and the backmark dates this button to 1780-1816 & possibly later according to McGuinn and Bazelon's "American Military Buttons Makers and Dealers; Their Backmarks and Dates."  The digger marked lightly in pencil on the rear "CC" indicating that he recovered this button from Cedar Creek.  This early flat button will be an excellent addition to any excavated pre-Civil War button or general relic collection.
Recovered: Cedar Creek, VA
