Flat Buttons with Letters "R" and "S"
These two excavated cuff size buttons appear to be constructed of silver and similarly cut into thin octagonal shapes. Though only slightly different in size, each button has a letter crudely etched into the face, one with an "S" and straight line border, the other with an "R" with a xig-zag border. The "S" button measures approximately 13 mm and retains its shank while the "R" button measures approximately 12 mm and is missing its shank. Their recovery site is unknown. This delicate pair of buttons, while not military buttons, were included in a small group of excavated Civil War military buttons recently acquired by Virginia Relics. They will be an excellent addition to any excavated button or general relic collection.
