1863 Gustavus Lindenmueller Token

SOLD

This excavated 1863 Gustavus Lindenmueller token was recovered by the late Dennis Irvin.  These tokens were privately produced and distributed during the Civil War between 1861 and 1864.  On one side of the token is a bearded bust facing left surrounded by 13 stars with the date of "1863" at the bottom.  On the reverse is the name 'Gustavus Lindenmuller' around the outer edge of coin with "New York" at the bottom. There is a beer stein in center surrounded by an incomplete circle of plant leaves, inside the name above.  Gustavus Lindenmueller was a barkeeper in New York who had these tokens produced until the US congress outlawed them.  This token measures approximately one inch in diameter and is in fair condition.  It makes perfect sense that Dennis Irvin recovered this token as he, and his brother Paul, regularly hunted the New York Excelsior Brigade camp in the area of Brandy Station, VA.  Clicking on the above Dennis Irvin link will take you there story of what they found there.  This token will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War token, campsite, or general relic collection.
