Iron Curb Chain

SOLD

This excavated iron curb chain is complete and in good condition.  Curb chains are a flat linked chain that ran under the chin groove of a horse as part of the curb bit.  I see fewer iron chains than brass chains and likely due to the effects of ground action on the iron.  An example of this relic is pictured in "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch on page 128, item #4 and also in Stanley S. Phillip's book "Excavated Artifacts From Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War Supplement One" on page 69 as item #1.  This chain measures approximately 8 inches in length and will be an excellent example to add to any excavated Civil War campsite, battlefield, or general relic collection.
