Murphy's Hotel Room Key Tag - Richmond, VA

SOLD

This hotel room key tag is from "The Murphy Hotel" (or Murphy's Hotel) which was once a leading hotel in downtown Richmond, Virginia. Its location was at the corner of 8th and Broad Streets.  The tag was recovered by Dennis Irvin in Fauquier Co., VA.and to read more about the digger click on his link.  It is believed to be constructed of brass which has aged into a very nice brown patina.  Stamped into the tag is the following "MURPHY'S HOTEL RICHMOND, VA / 68 / IF CARRIED AWAY RETURN  * UNSEALED *  BY MAIL POSTAGE 2 CENTS".  On the rear stamped in very small letters is "W.W. WILCOX & CO  CHICAGO".  It measures approximately 2 5/16 inches in diameter and has no cracks, breaks, repairs, or major bends.  The original Murphy hotel was built in 1872. In 1886, all new buildings and elevated walkway over 8th Street were completed. The hotel was completely torn down in 1913 and replaced with a larger 12- story building. The hotel was later sold to the state, and in 1969 was converted to offices. It was demolished in 2007.
