Pocket Knife

This small, excavated iron pocket-knife is in fair condition. It is stable but rusty and is missing its likely wooden outer grip. Its frame, with its green patina and constructed of either brass or copper, houses two blades, one of which, is partially missing. It was lightly clear coated long ago so as to prevent further deterioration. It does not appear to have been repaired. It measures approximately 3/4 x 3-3/16 inches and was recovered in the area of Maryland Heights, MD

Various examples are found in the following Civil War relic reference books:

  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch, page 65.
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillip, pages 158 & 159.
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War Supplement One" by Stanley S. Phillips, pages 129-131.

See above pages in additional images.

This pocket-knife will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War edged weapon, campsite, battlefield, or general relic collection.
