CS 2.9 Inch Read Long Model Shell

SOLD

This fired Confederate 2.9 inch Read long model shell is very good condition.  These shells employed a long thin copper sabot and a copper fuze plug.  This shell has what is known as "Dr. Read's Safety Groove" lathed into the lower iron body just above the sabot.  According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", its purpose was to help prevent base chipping.  Also noted by Peter George is the flame groove that was filed into the sabot using a rat-tail file which is characteristic of GA/SC manufacture.  Note also where the rat-tail file created a small groove in the base iron during the filing process just above the sabot's groove (an example of the type of flame groove can be found on a CS 3.25" Long Sabot Bourreleted Long Read Shell on page 268 in the above mentioned reference book, 1993 edition).  Pete advised that the shell being offered in this listing was alike in every way to the Atlanta Arsenal version pictured in the above mentioned book on page 250, with the exception of not having a rebated body above the sabot.  The majority of the iron of this shell is very smooth with areas of more moderate surface pitting towards its nose.  The shell weighs approximately 9.4 pounds and is approximately 8 3/4 inches in length.  Due to the bending on one side of the sabot the shell has a slight lean when stood on its base.  A free metal stand will accompany this shell free of charge.  This rare shell is disarmed, ready for display, and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
