Relic Sharps and Hankins 1861 Navy Rifle

SOLD

Relic Sharps and Hankins Model 1861 Navy Rifle .52 caliber Rimfire Breechloader.

The Sharps and Hankins rifles were made under contract with the U.S. Navy in 1861 and 1862 to arm units of the Marine Corps. A total of approximately 700 were produced making these Civil War weapons extremely rare. This unique single shot firearm was loaded by sliding the barrel forward utilizing the combination trigger guard/loading lever. According to the signed documentation supplied by its former owner, this rifle was purchased several years ago from the Hemmingway Estate in Edgecombe County, NC which is near Bethel, N.C. The gun is considered to be a relic artifact from “Potter’s Raid” on Tarboro and Rocky Mount N.C., which occurred in mid-July 1863. It was recovered several years after the War by loggers, near the site of the action at Daniels School occupied by a two-gun battery of Co. H of the 3rd New York Marine Artillery. The site of the former Daniels School house is now occupied by the intersection of N.C. Highway 64 and Shiloh Farm Road. This relic rifle has a 32-3/4 inch barrel with front and rear sights in place, and there is a lug below the muzzle for a saber bayonet. The frame and action are complete with the exception of a broken off portion of the lever ring which is a part of, and located to the rear of, the trigger guard. Also missing is the trigger. The buttstock is in place with the brass butt plate attached. Missing from the relic are the fore stock and the barrel bands that held it to the barrel. The value of this authentic Civil War weapon is in its rarity and its use by the Marine Corps during the Civil War. This rifle will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War firearm or general relic collection.
