Excavated .32 Caliber Starr Four-Barrel Pepperbox Pistol - Second Model

SOLD

Item: Excavated .32 Caliber Starr Four-Barrel Pepperbox Pistol - Second Model
Condition: Fair, excavated, non-working.  This four-shot rimfire pistol is missing its walnut grips. Its iron button type trigger, hammer, and barrels are heavily pitted.  The iron parts were lightly clear coated at some point.  There are areas where the clear coat has flaked off but otherwise the entire gun is stable.  On the left side of forward frame is the mark of "STARR'S PAT'S MAY 10. 1864" and stamped into one side of the grip frame is the number "31".
Comments: This pistol was acquired directly from the digger who provided a copy of a drawing of Camp Small, where this pistol was recovered.   An image of this drawing is included in the additional images in this listing.  According to "Flayderman's Guide To Antique American Firearms" 9th Edition, there were slightly over 2,000 of these pistols manufactured of which approximately 1,500 were 4th and 5th models.  This 2nd model example places it in the first 500 of these pistols produced.
Recovered:  Camp Small (aka Camp Melvale) along Jones Falls in the Cross Keys area outside of Baltimore City, MD.
Approximate size: 3-1/8 inch barrel and 5-3/4 inches overall length.
