US Belt Buckle - Flat Bottom "U" - 15TH MASS.

SOLD

Item: ExcavatedUS oval waist belt plate.
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass, with solder fill, and "puppy paw" type attachment hooks.
Condition: Good, excavated. Its brass front has a rich brown patina with areas of hardened yellowed surface crust resulting from ground action.  There is a small scuff in the brass in the top portion of the letter "S" exposing a small bit of rear solder.  It appears that the plate was originally, thinly filled with solder, with the majority of it still present.  There is some solder surface flaking, mainly in areas toward the rim, with a bit of rear brass present in a few areas directly next to the rim.  The three attachment hooks are present and there is an inward rim bend at the "S" end of the plate.  There are no cracks, repairs, other breaks or bends.
Comments:  According to O'Donnell and Campbell's "American Military Belt Plates" reference book, these plates with the flat bottom "U", due to their recovery location where Massachusetts troops have been present, have been positively associated with 15th Massachusetts Infantry Regiment.  An example of this type plate can be found in the above mentioned book on page 305, plate 489.  The flat bottom "U" design is seldom encountered and this buckle will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
Recovered: Wilderness, VA.
Approximate size:  57 x 85 mm.  Length size is short by 4 mm as a result above mentioned bend.
