US Belt Buckle Marked "W. H. SMITH BROOKLYN"

SOLD

Item: Excavated US oval waist belt plate marked "W. H. SMITH BROOKLYN".
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass, with raised stamped letters "US", rear with solder fill and stud type attachment hooks.
Condition: Very good, excavated. Its brass front has a brown patina with areas of yellow soil.  The rear has nearly all of its solder with some minor flaking but is now solid.  There is a small damaged area at the rim where the digger applied a clear coating to it, and to other areas of the rear so as to prevent further flaking. The manufacturer's stamp of "W. H. SMITH BROOKLYN" is stamped into the rear with nearly every letter still visible. All three attachment belt attachment hooks remain in place and the buckle has no cracks, repairs, or major bends.
Comments:  Though the Smith mark is the most common of manufacturer's stamps, most plates recovered do not have a manufacturer's stamp making those that are recovered, a rarity. This plate is will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
Recovered: Dispatch Station, VA
Approximate size: 55 x 85 mm.
