US Belt Buckle Marked "W. H. SMITH BROOKLYN"

SOLD

Item: ExcavatedUS oval waist belt plate marked "W. H. SMITH BROOKLYN".
Construction: Front stamped thin sheet brass, with raised stamped letters "US", a rear with solder fill, and stud type attachment hooks.
Condition: Very good. Its brass front has a dull yellowed brass patina with areas of darker discoloration.  The rear has all of its solder with no flaking and a very strong and complete manufacturer's mark of "W. H. SMITH BROOKLYN".  This has to be one of the strongest and best Smith marks I have come across.  All three attachment hooks remain in place.  On the brass face is a freeze crack running from the bottom of the "S" to the rim, and a period bend at the upper "S" end.
Comments:  This plate is a water find and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
Recovered: Fisher's Hill, VA
Approximate size: 55 x 86 mm.
