This US cartridge box plate is in excellent condition and was recovered in the area of Chancellorsville, VA. These plates were used as not only an ornament on the soldiers cartridge box but its weight also helped keep the flap of the box closed to protect the cartridges from the elements. The brass face of this example, with the tall raised letters "US", has aged into a very pleasing dark brown patina. There is still some encrusted Virginia soil lingering on its face and rim. The rear has a full complement of solder and both flap attachment loops, which are complete, though rusty and delicate. This plate has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection. Approx. 57 x 88 mm.
