US Cartridge Box Plate Maker Marked "BOYD & SONS BOSTON"

SOLD

Item: Excavated US cartridge box plate maker marked "BOYD & SONS BOSTON".
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and iron wire loops.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, marked. Its unblemished brass front, with the raised letters "US", has a base brown patina that includes light green coloring primarily at the "S" end.  The rear has a complete complement of solder with both iron attachment loops complete and straight-up.  The iron loops, which are stable, were clear coated at some point to prevent further deterioration. The "BOYD & SONS" portion of the manufacturer's stamp is deeply stamped and clearly visible, while the "BOSTON" portion, though present. is weakly stamped.  Nearly every letter of "BOSTON" is visible under good lighting with a magnifyer.  A very thin layer of clear coating is also present in the area of the stamping.  The plate has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Comments:  This very nice marked cartridge box plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
Recovered: Dispatch Station, VA.
Approximate size: 56 x 88 mm.
