Patriotic Watch Fob

SOLD

I am uncertain, as to whether or not, this patriotic watch fob is of the Civil War period however, it was recovered along with Civil War relics in the area of Brownsburg, VA.  It is in very good condition and is likely a civilian piece. The device is constructed of cast brass and measures approximately 1-3/8 x 1-11/16 inches.  The brass has aged into an overall mostly brown patina. The front shows a raised shield with stars and stripes with a spread wing eagle above, and the letters "USA" above the eagle.  The attachment loop at the top, while bent downwards, is complete and unbroken.  Other excavated examples of watch fobs can be found in Stanley S. Phillip's book "Excavated Artifacts From Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War Supplement One" on pages 181-183 and also in the fourth printing of Stanley S. Phillip's book "Excavated Artifacts From Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" on pages 122 & 123. This patriotic watch fob will be an excellent addition to any excavated general relic collection.
