VIRGINIA CIVIL WAR RELICS

Richard E. Clem

Relic Hunter, Researcher and Writer

Richard E. Clem was born January 18, 1940.  Along with his brother Don, he began “eyeballing” relics in the Antietam, MD area in the early 1960’s.  After finding his first bullet, he was hooked, and metal detectors were purchased!  Over the years, using White’s detectors, the brothers hunted various counties throughout Maryland, Virginia, and West Virginia.  They worked four-day weeks to leave Fridays free for relic hunting.

One of Richard’s more interesting finds was a small silver ID badge which was inscribed “Sergt. C.H. Willett, Co.E, 44th Regt.N.Y.S.VOL.”  An 1852 two and a half dollar gold coin, found near Summit Point, West Virginia, is another one of his favorite finds.  Richard also feels blessed to have found four Civil War ID tags on what he remembers as his best hunting days.

Now a retired wood worker , Richard has had over 90 Civil War articles published in North South Trader's Civil War, Maryland Cracker Barrel Magazine, and The Washington Times newspaper.  He enjoys reading, writing, researching, and relic hunting on what he considers the most interesting time in our nation's history - the War Between the States.

Richard still gets out once a week, but, like many diggers, finds it ever more difficult to locate sites to search.
