PC5434
                  Mississippi Infantry Coat Button

Backmark:  "HYDE & GOODRICH . / N-O."
Construction:  Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size:  21 mm.
Condition:   Fair, excavated, secure shank present.  This button has a block letter "I" within a raised star surrounded by "MISSISSIPPI".  It has a very nice chocolate brown patina with just the right amount of gilt high-lighting the star and letters.  It has a very old and moderately deep crevasse in its face but remains solidly intact.  The button has no cracks, breaks, or repairs and just how the crevasse was made is a mystery.  It does not appear to be the result of a digger's digging implement as the patina remains evenly brown in this area.  It is my opinion that it is the result of some type of period damage.  The rear has a tiny label indicating where it was recovered.
RecoveredCross Keys, VA. and acquired direct from the Virginia digger.

Recovered:  In the Richmond, VA area in the 1950 - 60's by local Virginia relic hunter, Jim Cullinan.  Jim was one of the early Civil War relic hunters that started out with a true "army mine detector" that actually required a backpack to operate.

Pre-Civil War Virginia Militia Coat Button - "Soup Bowl"

Backmark:  "* RICH * / TREBLE GILT" rm.
Construction:  Very high convex, one-piece.
Approximate size: 22 mm.
Condition:  Very good, excavated, secure shank present.  This difficult to recover "soup bowl" variety of this button has a dark brown patina with traces of gilt still nicely outlining areas of the Virginia state motto "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS" or "Thus ever to tyrants".   The term "soup bowl" is derived from the fact that the button was manufactured into a deeper curved bowl instead of the more common low convex example.  The soup bowl variety is much harder to recover than the low convex examples.  This example has no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
RemarksThis button was recovered by Ms. Kelley Rea.  Kelley is a relic hunter in the Hampton Rhodes area of Virginia and she has managed to pluck four of these buttons from the same yard of a house site.  It is believed that all four are most likely from the same coat.  While women relic hunters are a rare find, so are these buttons!!  The first two of these buttons that Kelley found were published in March - April Best Finds of 2012 issue of the online periodical "Relic Hunter".  Click on the link to see these buttons found on page 20 of that issue.  The button offered here is not one of the published buttons as it was recovered several months after the first two were found.
