"Civil War Artifacts - A Guide For The Historian"        Click here to see more Books
                              by Howard R. Crouch - 6th Edition

Brand New and Signed by the Author

This book is a comprehensive collection of photographs and captions of excavated Civil War relics and is absolutely essential for any collector or enthusiast.  Originally published in 1995 with 238 pages covering nearly everything a Civil War relic hunter/collector could expect to find from buttons, bullets, bottles, swords, buckles, plates, guns, badges, uniform items, canteens, horse equipment, stencils, camp items etc..... it still remains today an extremely useful tool in identifying those relics recovered from the backyards, trails, farm fields, woodlands, and most anywhere the Civil War took place.  Click on the thumbnail image to the left to see a small sampling of some of the pages.   While this magnificent book doesn't cover every relic associated with the Civil War, it does provide a broad look at what a relic hunter/collector might bring home after a day of hunting.   The best part of this book for me is the fact that with its shear volume of items, I can never manage to see everything in it.  Each time I pick it up, to either ID an item that I am researching or just to thumb through, my attention will inevitably be drawn to yet another relic that I failed to see during a previous reading.  I will then spend another half hour pondering that piece forgetting about what I was originally looking for!  What I am offering is a hard bound copy which is brand new and is personally signed by Howard Crouch.   It measures approximately 8 3/4 x 11 1/4 inches and has 238 pages with photographs and captions on nearly every page.  $49.50  Ordering Information  or  Questions?

Patent Box Spurs with Boxes         Click here to see more Non-Excavated Relics

This non-excavated pair of patent box spurs are in excellent condition.  What sets this pair apart from other available examples is the fact that the boxes are present.  According to Howard R. Crouch's book "Historic American Spurs", the box was actually mounted into a cavity in the rear of the boot.  Inside the box was a spring loaded latch that the spur would slide and lock into.  This would eliminate the need for the leather straps and buckles.  These spurs date to the Civil War and afterwards.  An illustration of these spurs can be found in the 1864 Schuyler, Hartley and Graham catalog.  The spur itself measures 2 1/4 (width at its widest point) x 3 3/8 inches in length.   SOLD

Allegheny Arsenal Marked US Cavalry Spur      Click here to see more Misc. Excavated Relics

This US cavalry spur is in excellent condition and its brass has aged into a very pleasing brown patina.  One of its strap plates is crisply marked "ALLEGHENY ARSENAL" and also with the number "2" indicating size.  The original rowels for these spurs were typically made of iron and configured differently from the rowel on this spur.  This spur includes a replacement rowel which is made of brass and appears to have been added long ago due to evidence of wear at the area of the rowel hole.  This spur has no cracks, breaks, or major bends and will make an excellent relic to add to any Civil War cavalry or general relic collection.  Measures approximately 3 3/8 in width x 5 inches in length.   $175.00  Order Information  or  Questions?

Hand Cuffs              Click here to see more Misc. Excavated Relics

These iron hand cuffs were recovered decades ago by Gene Cooley in the Varina area of Virginia just east of Richmond.  This locked pair is complete and were clear coated by Mr. Cooley so as to prevent further deterioration.  Hand cuffs of this same style have been recovered from other Civil War sites in Virginia.  An example of this same style hand cuff can be found in Howard Crouch's book "Civil War Artifacts" on page 144, item # 4.  Another like example can be found pictured in the fourth printing of Stanley S. Phillip's book "Excavated Artifacts From Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" on page 169 as item #1.  This pair is in remarkably good shape and will display beautifully in any excavated campsite or general relic collection.   $295.00   Order Information  or  Questions?

This excavated Confederate Gardner "blow thru" bullet is a unique relic and was recovered just east of Richmond, VA by long time relic hunter Gene Cooley.   Due to the thin walls of the bullet nose, caused by improper casting, the force of the firing would cause the bullet to be "blown-through".  This is an excellent display piece for any Civil war bullet collection or general relic collection.   To read more about Mr. Cooley please click here.  $55.00   Order Information  or  Questions?

This monumental book by Michael J. O'Donnell and J. Duncan Campbell, is by far the most comprehensive reference books on American military belt plates available.  With 616 pages, this brand new third edition covers belt, cartridge box and eagle plates from the Revolutionary War through the very early 1900's.  Of course my favorite part is the large portion devoted to the Civil War.  Nearly every page shows pictures of front and rear of pictures with a description of each plate.  If you collect plates then this book is a must have.  $49.50   Ordering Information  or  Questions?

Jeff Davis Hat Insignia    Click here to see more Insignia

This excavated Jeff Davis hat insignia is in very good condition and has a very nice dusty brown-green patina.  Its face is near perfect and shows a well defined eagle clutching arrows in its left talon and an olive branch in its right.  The high resolution picture of the front shows a tiny bit of surface wear to the left of the eagles lower neck where there is a very small area where there is surface wear.  This is not a hole or a repair and is mentioned for exactness.  The rear is in very good condition and is missing its two attachment loops.  It has no cracks, bends, or repairs and was recovered by a Virginia relic hunter in Charles City County, VA. where General George B. McClellan had his headquarters.  It was this location, in June and July of 1862, that supplied 140,000 Union troops. This very handsome Civil War relic, direct from the digger, will make an excellent addition to any Civil War insignia or general relic collection.  Approx.  1 7/8 x 2 1/2 inches.  $195.00  Order Information  or  Questions?

This US belt plate with the "puppy paw" style attachment hooks has that just dug look.  This plate is actually out of a 20 year old private collection of relics and was excavated in the Richmond, VA area.  The plate is in near perfect condition with only one flaw.  Located at the 2 o'clock position is a slight nick in the rim where most likely it was struck by the digger's tool.  The brass face of the plate with areas still soil covered has a light yellow brown appearance.   The rear lead is smooth and complete with all attachment hooks present.  This plate has no cracks, no breaks (other than the nick mentioned above) and no bends or repairs.  This plate is a very nice looking "definitely dug" example.  Approx.  54 x 85 mm.  $335.00   Order Information  or  Questions?
