Comments:  Excellent seven groove rifling shows on the white lead sabot. According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", this wood fuzed example is Hotchkiss's 1855 patent, manufactured before the war in very small numbers, thereby making this example quite rare. Interestingly, this pre-Civil War manufactured shell was recovered at a late war site due to Grant's relentless 1864 Virginia Campaign requiring the issuing obsolete pre-war ammunition stocks". This 3-inch Hotchkiss shell will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery, battlefield, or general relic collection.
