Spencer Carbine Cartridge - Gnawed

SOLD

Item: Spencer Carbine Cartridge - Gnawed
Caliber: .52
Condition: Good solid excavated condition. Both bullet and brass cartridge are still soil coated and appear to have been gnawed upon by some varmint, though not horribly. There is a small hole in the cartridge on one side likely from a sharp tooth. Under the soil coating, the bullet has a white patina and the cartridge casing has a green patina. The cartridge is very solid with no fractures, repairs and is not a "put-together".
Recovered: Beech Grove, TN.
Approximate size: .55 inch diameter x 1.68 inch length.
Reference:  Similar examples can be found in the following Civil War relic reference books:

  • "A Handbook of Civil War Bullets and Cartridges" by James E. Thomas and Dean S. Thomas on page 20, #87.

Scans of these pages are included in the additional images.

Comments: This cartridge and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War bullet, cartridge, or general relic collection.
