This pair of non-excavated heavy artillery stirrups are in good condition and were likely a barn find. Stamped on the underside of the foot rest are the large letters "US", "Watervliet Arsenal N.Y" and "P.V.H.". The letters "P.V.H" represents the inspector's initials. They are constructed of solid cast brass and weigh approximately 1.2 pounds each. The brass has aged into a very pleasing dark grey patina and the stamped letters are all visible. Included in the additional images is page 137 from the relic reference book "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard R. Crouch, which shows a similar marked stirrup as item 5. These stirrups measure approximately 4 7/8 9 (overall width) x 5 1/2 inches (overall height) x 1-1/2 inches (depth of tread). They have no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs and will be an excellent addition to any Civil War saddlery, artillery, or general relic collection.
