Belt Plate Loop and Tongue Bar for State Militia Buckle

SOLD

This belt plate loop with tongue bar for multi-piece state militia buckle was recovered in the area of Brandy Station, VA.  It has an overall rich brown patina and a loop height of approximately 57 mm. More measurements are included in the additional images. The belt loop top and inner bars have a distinctive raised floral design that sets it apart from other examples. Examples of similar tongues with this ornate design are shown in the following Civil War buckle reference books:

  • "Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates" by Steve E. Mullinax on page 172, plate 316; also on page 205, plates 380 & 381 (also in later "Expanded Edition" of same book on page 191, plate 348; also on page 227, plates 419 & 420.

  • "Civil War Relics from South Carolina" by Celeste C. Topper and David L. Topper on page 44.
  • "American Military Belt Plates" by Michael J. O'Donnell and J. Duncan Campbell, on page 188, plate 274; also page 289, plate 277; and page 291, plates 280 & 281.

  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch on page 217, item 1 and on page 219, item 3.

See scans of the above pages in the additional images.

Other than the inward bend of the belt loop's outer bar the device is in good shape. An outline in the shape of an arc is still visible on the front of the bar, towards the belt loop end, where the missing disk was attached. There are also tiny remnants of solder present at the front bottom edge at the lower end of the arc that once held the disk to the bar. Should you have the appropriate disk for this tongue bar, then this is an excellent opportunity to complete this part of the buckle.
