Camp Candle Holder

This excavated camp candle holder is in very good solid condition. It is constructed of iron and still retains its support pin. At some point it was lightly clear coated so as to stabilize its surface. It measures approximately 1-3/8 inches in diameter at the rim and 1-7/8 inches in length.

Similar examples of this hat insignia can be found in the following relic reference books:

  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard R. Crouch on page 41, item 7.
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War 1861-1865" by Stanley S. Phillips on page 132 item 1.

Scans of the above noted reference book pages are included in the additional images. These holders were used by soldiers for the purposes of supporting the candle for illumination. Recovery location is unknown. This camp candle holder will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War campsite or general relic collection.
