Item: Excavated Federal carbine sling buckle with belt-end tip.
Construction: Cast brass with brazed on middle bar and rotating tangs.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, and complete. The brass has aged into a greenish-brown patina. Both tangs are present and freely rotate. The brass belt end tip has a green patina and all four rivets still present.
Comments: These buckles fastened the cavalryman's leather sling that carried a carbine. The belt end tip was fastened to the opposite end of the sling and provided stiffness to the leather tip when sliding it into the buckle. I am not certain that the belt end tip was recovered with the buckle but they are a fairly good match. This buckle and belt-end tip will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War buckle or general relic collection.
Recovered: Gravely Springs, AL
Approximate size: 52 x 83 mm.
