Carved .69 Caliber Round Ball

Item: Carved .69 Caliber Round Ball
Condition: Excellent, excavated. Overall white patina. Period surface carve lines and hole. No repairs.
Recovered:  Camp Mallory, Evansport, Prince William County, Va.
Approximate size:  .652 inch diameter, 399.8 grains (weight)
Reference: M&M: page 65 / Thomas' RBTR Part Four, items 102-110.
Comments: This excavated carved round ball was acquired directly from the digger. Included in the additional images is a scanned image of the digger (on far left), with his hunting buddies and their detectors. Occasionally balls and bullets are recovered with whittle marks or, in rare instances, intricate carvings, hand-crafted by soldiers using their pocket knives just to pass the time. This round ball clearly has slightly curved lines extending from a small carved hole all leading to other similarly carved lines around its surface. It will be an excellent addition to any excavated carved Civil War ball, bullet, or general relic collection.
