Item: Chatham Artillery Button
Backmark: "GILT *******" rm
Construction: Flat, one-piece.
Approximate size: 22 mm.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, secure bent shank present. The button shows a raised coiled snake with raised letters underneath that read "DONT TREAD ON ME". A bit of gilt remains in and around the snake and backmark all on a very pleasing brown-green patina. No cracks, breaks, repairs, or other bends.

Comments:  The Chatham Artillery was organized in the 1700s as an elite militia organization that saw service in the War of 1812 and the Civil War.
