Item: Confederate 12 Pounder Side-Loader Case-Shot Shell - Rare Copper Side-Plug
Gun: 12-pounder smoothbore howitzer, 4.62-inch caliber.
Construction: Cast iron with copper fuze adaptor (missing) and copper side-plug.
Approximate size: Weight: 9.4 pounds. Diameter: 4.5 inches.
Condition: Good, excavated, with moderate surface pitting on the iron body and no repairs. While the copper side-plug is present, the copper fuze adaptor is not. This case-shot is still in its "as-dug" condition and has been professionally deactivated.
Recovered: Seven Days Battles areas.
Comments: According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", there are four types of side-plugs: lead, iron, brass, and copper. As stated above, this case-shot has the copper type which is the rarest and hardly ever encountered. The absence of a fuze adaptor allows for a unique view of the interior of the case-shot matrix inside the shell (see additional images). It will display very nicely in any office, den, or family room and will also be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
