Confederate 2.9 inch Read Long-Model Shell

SOLD

Item: Fired Confederate 2.9 inch Read Long-Model Shell
Fusing: Copper fuse adaptor.
Construction:
Cast iron with Read copper ring sabot.
Approximate size:
Weight: 8.6 pounds. Diameter: 2.83 inches. Length: 8-7/8 inches.
Condition:
Very good, excavated, with light-moderate pitting with heavy base chipping. Its copper fuse is in very good condition. The copper sabot is intact showing three lands and grooves and its lathe dimple is clearly visible in the base view. Lathe lines are also clearly visible on one side of the shell. The shell has been cleaned, lightly clear coated, and deactivated.
Recovered: Unknown
Comments:  According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", a Read "Long-Model" shell with a copper fuse AND a copper sabot is rare find. This shell would have been fired from a 10 pounder 2.9 inch caliber Parrott rifle and it will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
