Item: Confederate 2.9 inch Read Long-Model Shell
Construction: Cast iron with wrought iron ring sabot.
Fuzing: Wood plug.
Approximate size: Weight: 8.8 pounds. Diameter: 2.86 inches Length: 8-5/8 inches.
Condition: Excellent, excavated, fired. The surface has nearly no surface pitting and only very little rust build-up. There is a rectangular mark on the side of the shell which is the result of the shell being initially mounted on the lathe off-center. According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", the deep lathe groove in the shell's body, just above the sabot, was done to accommodate a greased cord which lubricated the cannon's rifling grooves upon firing. This shell is inactive and there are no repairs.
Recovered: Cross Keys, VA
Comments: This artillery shell was acquired directly from the digger and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
