This Confederate M1840 Mounted Artillery Saber is in very good condition. The ricasso is fully stamped “THOMAS , GRISWOLD & Co. / NEW ORLEANS.”. In August 1861, the partnership of Hyde & Goodrich was dissolved by the withdrawal of A. L. Hyde and the firm continued as Thomas, Griswold & Co. on the corner of Canal and Royal Streets. The firm manufactured and sold many types of war supplies but are mainly known for their swords, sabers and cutlasses. The business remained in operation only eight months before closing on April 24, 1862, a few weeks prior to the occupation of New Orleans by Federal forces.
The 31-5/8” blade has patchy dark mottling and its edge has no nicks. It has a semi-stopped fuller indicative of Griswold’s products which terminates 3/4” from the original leather washer. The blades' width measures approximately 1-1/4". The manufacturer's mark of “THOMAS , GRISWOLD & Co. / NEW ORLEANS.” found on its ricasso, is strong and, interestingly, is double stamped. The grip retains its original leather wrap but is missing all but a small portion of its twisted wire. The single brass hand guard has a quillion at its top end which terminates at its cast brass pommel. There is very slight movement between the guard and the blade. The area, where the pommel meets the peened end of the blade tang, is smooth. Its brass components show only light wear and have an attractive dark patina.
The entire scabbard is made of brass and remains in excellent shape. There are only a couple of very minor dents along its bottom edge. Two bands hold 1-5/16” rings. The throat and drag are are in great shape, with the drag showing two minor casting flaws on one side. A soldered seam runs along the bottom of the scabbard.
This rare Confederate artillery sword and scabbard is not often available and will be an excellent addition to any Civil War edged weapon or general relic collection.
