Display of Confederate Cartridge Box Contents and Parts, Belt Buckle, Gun Tool, and Bayonet Scabbard Hardware

SOLD

FROM THE PETER GEORGE COLLECTION

This display of excavated relics are the contents and parts of a Confederate cartridge box, belt buckle, and bayonet scabbard hardware all recovered in the Richmond, VA area. The group is from the collection of Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War". Peter mentioned that that all of the items were recovered from the same dig site hole. Relics included are: four Enfield bullets, twelve Gardner bullets, 2 roller buckles, a lead finial, two rivets, a cast brass belt buckle (approx. 26 x 47mm), a bayonet scabbard tip and mount, and a combination gun tool.

Examples of the buckle and gun tool are pictured in the following relic reference books:

  • "Confederate General Service Accoutrement Plates" by Lon W. Keim, M.D. on page 336, item 561. (in a recent conversation with Dr. Keim, he advised that these buckles were "cast" and not "die stamped" as is stated in his book)
  • "Civil War Artifacts" by Howard Crouch on page 97, item 5.
  • "Excavated Artifacts from Battlefields and Campsites of The Civil War" by Stanley S. Phillips on pages 176, item 4.

These pages are included in the additional images.

This display will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War accoutrement or general relic collection.
