Item: Confederate "Richmond" Cavalry Spur - Published - Mississippi Cavalry
Construction: Cast brass with iron rowel.
Approximate size: 3-5/8 (W) x 5-1/4 (L) inches
Condition: Excellent, excavated, rowel present. Heavy well-made cast spur with an overall deep green patina. Rusty iron rowel present but immobile. No cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: 1985 in Colonel Benjamin Grierson's Cavalry Camp, LaGrange, Tennessee
Comments: In the fall of 1985 five fairly unknown relic hunters from various parts of the United States convened in LaGrange, TN for one day of relic hunting. The story of this hunt, "Explore: Grierson's Cavalry Camp", is documented in an issue of the North South Trader magazine, Volume XIII, Number 2. Scans of this article are also included in the additional images. This spur is the same spur pictured in this article on page 29. The article mentions that a small outfit of Mississippi cavalry troops had camped in the same location prior to Grierson's occupation of the area. The copy of the magazine, that will be included with this spur, was signed by three of the five relic hunters after its publication. The article mentions Grierson's Raid, occurring April 17 to May 2, 1863, that the 1959 movie, "The Horse Soldiers", starring John Wayne and William Holden, was based on. This published Confederate spur has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs and will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War spur, cavalry, or general relic collection.
