Design: This cut canceled note is dated April 6. 1863, watermarked "CSA", hand numbered, and signed. The front of the note shows the Confederate Capitol at Richmond, VA in the center, with C. G. Memminger who served as the Confederate Secretary of the Treasury, in lower right. Click on the preceding C.G. Memminger link to read more about him and his contributions. Printed on the front of the note beginning at the top edge: 

"FUNDABLE IN STOCK OR BONDS OF THE CONFEDERATE STATES. / 1st SERIES / TWO YEARS AFTER THE RATIFICATION OF A TREATY OF PEACE BETWEEN THE CONFEDERATE STATES & THE UNITED STATES / The Confederate States of America / WILL PAY TO Bearer FIVE DOLLARS. / Richmond / December 2nd, 1863 / 3rd SERIES  / Engraved by Keatinge & Ball Columbia. S.C. / Lithoga. by J.T. Paterson & Co. / RECEIVABLE IN PAYMENT OF ALL DUES EXCEPT EXPORT DUTIES." 

Also found on the front is a red, over-printed date of "OCTOBER 1863" representing the actual date of issue (see Comments section below). The rear shows a Roman numeral "V" and five circular medallions with the numeral "5" on blue ink. 

Approximate size: 3 x 6-7/8 inches.
Condition: Good. The crisp paper has several pinholes, incomplete and uneven borders, edge ware, small missing corner piece, and stains.

Comments: According to "Comprehensive Catalog of Confederate Paper Money", by Grover C. Criswell, on page 170, "All of the notes of this year (1863) are dated April 6th, 1863, but a red, over-printed date appears on all of the $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 denominations showing the year and month of issue. This was because the law limited the funding of notes and all certificates more than six months old." This original Confederate five dollar note will be an excellent addition to any Civil War note or general relic collection.
