Confederate Infantry Button with "Stars" - Non-Excavated

SOLD

Item: Confederate Infantry Button with "Stars" - Non-Excavated
Backmark:
Blank
Construction: Convex, two-piece.
Approximate size: 23 mm.
Condition: Excellent, non-excavated, secure shank present. On the front of this button is a raised Roman letter "I" surrounded by ten very visible raised five-pointed stars. The three stars sometimes found on the "I" are not visible on this example. This solid button has a very pleasing toned brown patina. The iron back is solidly intact. This button has no pushes, cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Reference: Tice: CSI255A1  Albert: CS 186
Comments: More often than not, the stars surrounding the letter "I" are barely visible however, in this case, all ten are definitely present. According to "Uniform Buttons of the United States 1776-1865" by Warren K. Tice, it is believed "that those buttons lacking stars on the "I" were struck on heavily degraded dies or had stars worn off by long field use." What I appreciate most about this particular example is the typical Confederate manufacturing crudeness as seen in the crimping of the rim to its tin back. This very handsome button will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War button or general relic collection.
