Construction: Cast copper.
Approximate size:
Head diameter: 1.21 inches. Length: 1.43 inches.
Excellent, excavated. Very nice deep green patina. The threads are in good condition and should allow the adaptor to easily rotate into a shell. On the side of the adaptor head is a visible gang mold scar (see Comments section below for explanation). There are no cracks, breaks, or repairs.
Richmond, VA area in the 1950 - 60's by local Virginia relic hunter, Jim Cullinan. Jim was one of the early Civil War relic hunters that started out with a true "army mine detector" that actually required a backpack to operate.

Scans of the above noted reference book pages are included in the additional images.

Comments:  According to Peter George, co-author of "Field Artillery Projectiles of the American Civil War", the period scar on one side of the head is a result of this fuse adaptor having been cast in a "gang" mold and subsequently being broken apart from the other fuse adaptors. See the additional images to see this scar. The two spanner holes, visible on the top of the adaptor and to either side of the center hole, accommodated a wrench used to screw it into the shell. Once the adaptor was in place, a paper time fuze, was inserted into the center hole. This Confederate fuze adaptor for spherical projectile will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War artillery or general relic collection.
