Confederate Tongue and Wreath Belt Buckle

Item: Excavated Confederate Tongue and Wreath Belt Buckle
Construction: Sand cast brass.
Condition: Good, excavated, . While the tongue and wreath were not recovered together, they have similar dusty mixed green patinas fit quite well together. The tongue and its belt loop are in overall very good condition with no cracks, breaks, or repairs. The tongue belt loop outer bar has a slight inward bend towards the inner bar. The oak leaf wreath and its belt loop are in fair condition. The entire circular portion of the wreath is solidly intact and, while it demonstrates the often encountered Confederate manufacturing crudeness, it has no breaks, bends, or repairs. A letter "L" is stamped into the wreath's inside face. The wreath belt loop appears to have been repaired, but am unsure as to the extent. There are minor cracks in the belt loop inner bar where it merges with the bar that extends from the wreath. This area appears fragile and should be handled with care.
Recovered: Tongue recovered Fredericksburg, VA area. Wreath recovery location is unknown.
Approximate size:
48 mm loop height; 47 mm wreath height; 83 mm overall belt plate length.
Comments:  An example of another wreath, manufactured by Leech and Rigdon (Memphis Novelty Works), also with the letter "L" is found in "Confederate Belt Buckles and Plates - Expanded Edition", by Steve E. Mullinax on page 32. An image of this page is included in the additional images. This Confederate belt buckle will be an excellent display piece or addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
