Item: Excavated US eagle plate marked "BOYD & SONS / BOSTON".
Construction: Stamped thin sheet brass with solder fill and two iron wire loops.
Condition: Excellent, excavated. Its brass face has an even army green patina with an eagle clutching arrows in its right talon and an olive branch in its left. There is a very small dent on the rim at the four o'clock position. The rear has a near full complement of solder and both iron attachment loops that are rusty, straight-up and complete. Also on the rear is the manufacturer's stamp of "BOYD & SONS / BOSTON". The majority of the mark is present and interestingly, "BOSTON" appears to be double stamped. The plate has no cracks, breaks, bends, or repairs.
Recovered: Off Squirrel Level Road in Petersburg, VA.
Approximate diameter: 63 mm.
Comments: This eagle plate will be an excellent addition to any excavated Civil War plate or general relic collection.
