This printing block of Joseph Evan Davis, son of Jefferson Davis, president of the Confederate States, is from the estate of an old Richmond, VA family who resided on Monument Avenue over several generations. Joseph Evan Davis, born on April 18, 1859, died at the age of five due to an accidental fall from the railing of the east portico of the White House of the Confederacy on April 30, 1864. Click on the above link to read more about Joseph Davis. According to the information provided to me by the family, the block was created in 1961 from a magnification of the original bronze engraving. It appears that the block is still useable to create ink images of this young lad and it would be an excellent addition to any Jefferson Davis or White House of the Confederacy collection. Approximately 2-1/8 x 2-3/8 x 13/16 inches.
