This US model-1850 foot officer's sword is in very good condition and is a well-crafted import likely from France. Its ornate cast brass guard is highly detailed and heavily gilded. Its center swelled wooden handle is wrapped in high quality sharkskin and tightly bound with a single twisted brass wire flanked on both sides by a single strand of brass wire. The brass hilt is slightly loose to the blade tang. Its brass pommel is decorated with ornate scrollwork of laurel leaves and features a tiered domed cap. The blade measures approximately 30 inches in length, 1-1/16 inch width, 22 inch stopped fuller with an integrated 12-3/8 inch long narrow fuller. The blade surface has a soft shine with minor areas of mild darkening. The etching on the obverse side consists of a spread wing eagle between a foliate design to either side. Closer to the handle are cannons, drum and a shield all under a panoply of flags. Towards the tip are cannons and drum also under a panoply of flags. Etched on the reverse are the letters "U.S." situated between a foliate design that contains what appear to be trumpets and a panoply of flags. The edge of the blade has a few minor nicks. The obverse ricasso is stamped with its assembly numeral "2". The reverse ricasso is blank. Its fancy buff leather washer with serrated edge, is present and complete. The scabbard is constructed of leather with brass mounts. Approximately 6-1/8 inches of the lower portion of the scabbard, including its brass drag is missing. The leather is in fair condition with the majority of its surface layer missing. This foot officer's sword will be an excellent addition to any Civil War sword or general relic collection.
